Compare recorders without discarding useful equipment.
A DVR typically records analog camera signals over coaxial cabling; an NVR records encoded video from IP cameras over a network.
Start with an equipment and cable inventory, then compare the compatibility and limits of each proposed path.
Review these together, not separately
- Recording settingsFrame rate, compression and schedule — the settings that produce the storage estimate.
- Usable storageCapacity after redundancy and overhead, at the settings actually proposed.
- Playback and exportHow a manager finds a moment and produces a file someone else can open.
- ExpansionChannels, drive bays and licence limits before the next camera is added.
Two recording architectures
Architecture is one decision; image quality, storage and usability are separate ones. Verify the exact camera, recorder, codec and integration support in the product documentation.
| DVR | NVR | |
|---|---|---|
| Camera type | Analog cameras | IP cameras |
| Typical cabling | Coaxial to the recorder | Ethernet, often with Power over Ethernet |
| Where video is encoded | At the recorder | At the camera |
| Common reason to choose it | Reuse of existing coax and cameras | New cabling, flexible placement, camera-side features |
| What to verify | Cable condition, recorder channel limits, recorded detail | Switch and PoE capacity, network design, usable storage |
Ask who owns the administrator account.
Review recording settings, usable storage, playback, export, and expansion requirements together. Ask who owns the administrator account and how configuration details will be handed over.
A recorder specification is only part of the decision; the business needs a system it can operate and maintain. Existing coaxial cable is a reason to investigate reuse, not a reason to replace everything automatically.
Planning information and consultation requests. Installation and monitoring availability, provider details, and service terms must be confirmed before work is arranged. This form is not for emergencies.
